Wolverhampton & District Auto Club was originally founded in 1947 and ran its first scramble meeting in 1948. Unfortunately, the club closed in 1950 only to be reborn in 1958 by AMCA Supremo Don Green and others. Since then the club has had its ups and downs. Since the year 2000 it has seen Chairman Mike Penn at the helm. Mike is also the South Staffs Group Co-ordinator.
When Mike took over there were just seven members, but thanks to hard work and dedication the club now boasts many more members and one of the most popular tracks in the country. The Club has hosted numerous Championship meetings and many IMBA events with more planned, in addition to the dozens of AMCA group meetings over the years. None of this has happened by mere chance.
Hungry Hill became the home of Wolverhampton Club around nine years ago. Since the initial meeting there, the track has been extended three times and has grown across three large fields which have been amalgamated in to one. Work parties spent many hours removing hedgerows and filling ditches and the club has spent over £8000 improving access to the paddock and track. Keeping the track in top condition has always been a priority for the Club and many thousands has been spent on machinery and a watering system.
Watering facilities have been dramatically improved with the installation of an 'under-track' diversion system which has significantly reduced delays during race days. But one of the most significant improvements was the use of a rock crushing machine on more than one occassion, planned again as and when required and has also actively replaced soil which has been lost due to errosion. Wolverhampton were the first AMCA Club to use this machine at a club track. The rock breaker has been used at Shobdon and Manmoel tracks, owned by the AMCA, to great success.
With so many improvements undertaken to an already impressive track, riding at Hungry Hill should be top of most riders wish list this year and by the time the IMBA comes around in May the track should be in perfect condition for Europe's top riders. Wolverhampton Club intends to continue investing in the circuit and equipment and to improve facilities for riders and spectators. |
