Teme Valley Motoduro Sunday 7th March 2010 |
Teme Valley MX Motoduro.
Clifton on Teme, Worcestershire.
Report and pics by Vanessa Tighe |
Teme Valley MX kick started their season last Sunday, running their popular annual motoduro at the superb Clifton on Teme venue, nr Worcestershire.
Despite cancelling the event two weeks previous due to inclement weather, an impressive 160 plus riders turned out for what was a superb event. Gethin Price stole the show, taking two wins in the MX1 Expert category and overall victory despite a strong challenge in race two from Geoff Hand, who blew his chances after running out of fuel. |
Teme Valley is primarily a MX Club, but they put in an extraordinary amount of effort for this annual event. The course ran a 5-mile lap consisting of open fields with motocross style loops and turns with connecting gates and drops/climbs into other fields. There were also woodland areas with alternate routes; an extreme section for the expert (or braver) riders with logs and boulders to contend with or a considerably longer/easier route for the less experienced.
The only downside to the course was it was a bit tight in places, and became very one lined when ruts started to appear, making it difficult to overtake causing a few jams. But that apart, it was an excellent course which any ‘Enduro’ club would love to get their hands on.

Glorious sunshine and a relaxed atmosphere saw the riders take to the line at 11am for the first of two one-hour races. The classes were separated into MX1/MX2 across the Experts, Seniors and Juniors with a Sportsman class for less competitive riders. Two classes of Inter Juniors 9-12 and 13-15 ran in between and after the main adult race for 45 minutes. The MX1 Experts were first to blast off the line following a dead engine start, with the rest of field following in intervals of 30 seconds. |
 |
Gethin Price led from start to finish in the opening race completing six laps, five minutes clear of second place Tom Hirons who put in five laps. Price once again got off to a good start in race two, but an early off allowed Geoff Hands to take the lead and hold Price off for two laps before running out of fuel, paving the way clear for Price to take the overall win by six minutes and the class win in the MX1 Experts.
Tom Hirons had two second-places for second overall with James Bevan, just 24 seconds behind Hiron in race two, rounding out the top three.
Liam Garbett stormed the opening race, finishing third in the overall standings and first in the MX2 Experts class but disaster struck in race two. Garbett was leading his class by two minutes when he tangled with a back marker, fell off and ‘punched’ a post, thus ending his day and a broken hand to top it off. |
|
Fellow Wyre Forest off Road club member Nathan Holtby took full advantage, taking the overall win, with Garbett still managing second place and David Corbett, who had a great second race, in third.
In the MX1 Seniors, Lee Green and Alec Trawford were evenly matched over the two races, Green snatching the overall just short of two minutes over Trawford in race one and by mere seconds in race two. Robert Murfin took third and upped his pace in race two to complete 6 laps, finishing just three minutes adrift of the top two. |
Luke Smith nailed the MX2 Seniors, taking both wins with ease, with Darren Morgan following him home on each occasion. Adam Sanders took third spot after a third place in race two bumped him up the standings.
Alex Green lapped the field in the MX1 Juniors, posting 4 laps in each race to take the overall win, with Richard Manser second in each race for second overall. Simon Rayner’s consistency paid off with two fourth places to take third overall.
Mark Godsall took overall honours in the MX2 Juniors, taking race one ten minutes clear of the second placed rider but declined his win, as he only wanted to ride for fun pushing Mark Lonergan into first, Ben Jones second and Darren Gwyther third.
Andrew Wakeman was the overall Sportsman winner, taking the race one win by a clear lap but had to work hard in race two as second place Colin Phillips closed him down to two minutes at the end. Tony Smallwood took the final podium spot. |

George Birchall took the overall in the Inters 9-12 class, leaving Joe Gwyther and Bradley Sulivan to battle it out for second and third. Gwyther was the eventual second place finisher on account of his better ranking in the second race, relegating Sulivan to third.
Katile Walker was superb in the Inters 13-15, posting 6 laps in each race, a lap clear of second place Vinnie Brown, who followed Walker home in each race. Mitch Gray took third spot.
A really great event in wonderful, albeit cold weather saw Teme Valley’s efforts really pay off in full. The only down side to the whole show, is that they only run one event per year here. A great shame because this venue offers MXers a chance to taste Enduro without too much strain (although they might not agree). The club would like to thank Bob Crump and family for their help and co-operation in providing the venue and wish Dan Morris a speedy recovery after breaking his leg in race two. |
