| Stratford Pyramids at Weatheroak Hill |
 |
Stratford Pyramids Weatheroak Hill track basked in late summer sunshine on Sunday as the club hosted their final event of the year. This small but technical track attracted a reasonable entry, considering the usual draw of the Beach race on the same day. Plenty of late entries boosted the numbers and as usual at Weatheroak Hill, there was a great atmosphere amongst riders and spectators.

The track is all natural terrain and reminiscent of scramble tracks of yesteryear but the racing is always fast and furious and last weekend was no exception, spectators witnessed one of the seasons greatest Expert races.
The MX1 Experts was a three-way battle, between Stratford’s own Si White, who could ride the course with his eyes closed, Simon Gower and Brad Frost.
Each one of them won a race and until the dying moments of the final moto all three riders would have tied on points for first place, but it was the second race which held the crowds attention.
Brad Frost lead from the start with White just inches behind and Gower breathing down his neck.

All three were inseparable from the moment the gate dropped to the fall of the chequered flag with Frosty clinging desperately to his narrow lead and White trying to pass while holding off Gower. They crossed the finish line with less than a second between them. West Midlands Group Co-ordinator Malc Brettle summed up how many onlookers felt: ‘I’d pay to watch racing like that any day of the week!’
White added to his opening race win with a second spot in the final moto, just squeezing past Frost, which just gave him a two-point lead and first overall in class. Gower slipped to second overall and Frost third.
The MX2 Experts was no less exciting with three different race winners but it wasn’t as close as MX1. Nate Phillips’ 1-3-2 scoreline put him fractionally clear of Alan Jones in second as Jamie Wilson filled the final spot on the winners podium. |

Somewhat unkindly, but maybe accurately, referred to as the OAP Seniors, the MX1 Seniors had Dan Miles a clear-cut winner with two race wins to his credit.
Mike Clarke and Scott Smith did their best to catch Miles but finished with three points gap between them, giving them second and third overall respectively.
Steve Chamberlain, one of the most experienced Seniors around decided on a policy that if he couldn’t win, he would try to look good and did manage to, once!
His excuses were many and varied; from old injuries to wrong helmet, piles and someone adjusting his rear brake without telling him.
Stratford’s Dave Corbett took a race to get into the swing of things then won the next two for a convincing MX2 Seniors victory. Lance Hancox and David Hughes were a little way off the leader but very close on points at the final flag as Hancox took second and Hughes third overall.
Danny Abrahall took out a one day licence and them proceeded to walk away with all three MX1 Junior races while Paul Handley did his best to break the Abrahall spell but finished as runner up in each race. Pyramids clubmate Pete Moore follwed him into third overall. |

Bijan Nasri was another rider who took a race to get into gear then won the remaining two MX2 Junior over 18 races. Jamie Parry followed him home for the overall runner up spot with Jack Croudace third.
The Under 18s witnessed three great rides by Dan Handley, winning two from three for the overall title as Tom Hipkiss and Richard Knowles tusselled for second and third spots with Hipkiss coming out slightly ahead.
The Inters class was far from full but this didn’t detract from the quality of racing. Sedgley’s James Porter took all three wins with Sam Clarke following him in each but it was Gareth Williams who just eased out Kinver clubmate Zach Hackett for third in class.
The sun shone and the laid back approach of the Pyramids suited the occasion, giving everyone an unexpectedly warm and memorable day out, all wishing they could have had a summer like that!
Although Weatheroak Hill is not one of the largest tracks around, it always has a great atmosphere and top notch racing combined with a friendly welcome and great viewing spaces where most of the track can be seen from a single spot.
If only all events were like this. |
