Shobdon at Downwood Farm |
 |
Bucking the trend of economic doom and gloom, Shobdon & District MCC attracted a full gate in almost every class, as their season got underway last Sunday at Downwood Farm. Always a popular track, many group riders were sent to neighbouring meetings.
Craig Chamberlain looked on top form and claimed all three victories in the MX1 Experts, as did Daniel Beck in the MX2 Juniors Group One and Ben Skellern in the Inter Juniors. Racing was fast, closely packed and very competitive on a track bursting with fast flowing straight sections and crowd-pleasing jumps.
The welcome spring sunshine saw the track get a thorough soaking on Saturday evening and once during racing. Dust did surface throughout the day but a light wind ensured that it cleared quite quickly. |
| MX1 Expert Craig Chamberlain started the day in fine style, grabbing the holeshot in the opener and leading from start to finish. Two further wins saw him take the overall on maximum points.
Second placed Darren Bennett pushed Chamberlain to the max in the last two races, with just two seconds separating the pair. Keeping it in the family, Anthony Bennett posted a 3-4-3 for third overall.
Shrewsbury’s Shaun Pearce got off to a flyer in the opening MX2 Experts Race and finished a clear 17 seconds ahead of Jamie Dobson. Dobson staged a great comeback to take races two and three to claim the overall, with Pearce a very close second. Dan Hill had mixed fortunes throughout the day, but did enough to claim third.
Ben Llewellyn took two out three for the overall in the MX1 Seniors with second place Carl Searles nipping in to take a race two win and second overall. Martin Ball took the third despite tying on points with fourth placed John Dufty.
Home rider David Lloyd (right) took the overall in the MX2 Seniors but lost out to second place David Corbett in the final moto. Ritchie Morgan had three consistent rides for third. |

In the MX1 Juniors, Tim Morgan posted a 1-1-4 scorecard for the top spot, with Robert Childs in second and a win under his belt in the final moto. Christopher Childs finished a few points behind in third.
Daniel Beck posted a hat trick of wins in the MX2 Juniors Group One, his closest competitors Daniel Charles and Mitchell Fellows in second and third respectively.
In the MX2 Juniors Group Two, Bradley Tranter took the overall narrowly missing out on all three, to second place Daniel Bishop who took the win in race two. Craig Searles took third, finishing the day on high with a runner up spot in the final moto. |

Ben Skellern (above left) was untouchable in the Inter Juniors, taking all three wins in style leaving Josh Croft and Joseph to battle it out, finishing second and third.
A few red flag incidents delayed proceedings a little but the meeting finished in daylight and all three blocks were run. A nice touch from the club saw trophy winners presented with a framed print in descending sizes for first, second and third, instead of the traditional trophy. The queue at the Photo Van at the end the day was evidence that this was a well-received prize. A great start to the 09 Season, well done Shobdon. |
