Walsall at Hobs Hole 20.04.08
On walking the track Saturday morning, I was amazed at how good the track looked after Walsall’s first meeting of the year. The track looked in pristine condition with the grading and the jump faces in top notch. I was really looking forward to the following day’s racing.

After waking up early on Sunday morning and noticing how wet it was out, I drove to the track and my thoughts were confirmed, the track was very vet and sloppy. I couldn’t believe it and felt sorry for the Walsall members after all the work they had put in.

Practice: We were first practice out and I loved it. As there weren’t any ruts formed at this point it was a little tricky in some sections. I could see some of the jump faces were starting to deteriorate already, but  I couldn’t wait till my first race.

Race1: After watching a few races before mine I noticed the track was getting rough and some deep ruts had formed, so I knew I had to get out the gate. I got a good jump out of the gate and was level with Dale Halls into the first corner, I exited in about 4th or 5th and knew I had to try and tag onto the leaders and find some lines. I made a few silly mistakes throughout the race but nothing serious. Finished in 8th.

Race 2: I got another good jump out the gate but locked up the back end and stalled the bike coming into the first corner. I managed to bump it but exited in 9th, the track had really deteriorated and I was struggling with some sections. Towards the end of the race, I tried to make a pass on Ricky Frankilin but stalled the bike coming into the corner. Finished 10th.

Race3: The temperature had started to drop and it looked like it was going to rain. I got another really good jump out the gate, had a scary moment in the first corner but came around in 4th. I was still straggling in some sections and the track was really rough now. I managed to find some smoother lines but it was to late. Finished 8th.

8-10-8 on the day, I’m really happy with 3 good starts but just need to work on my fitness a little, the track was really rough from the rain that fell from Saturday afternoon to Sunday Morning.

Walsall Put on a good meeting and worked hard throughout the whole day to ensure the meeting went without any hiccups. Well Done. Next weeks report will be from Burntwood’s meeting at Branston.
Burton at Stenson 13.04.08

Burton are new to our group, and having never rode at their Stenson track before I wasn’t sure what I was going to find.

When I dropped the start gate off on Saturday lunch time the first thing I noticed was the standing water on the edge of the driveway which you would have to cross to get onto paddock. I took a look at a few corners whilst I was there and they looked very soggy and soft and I knew it would be the same all the way around the track.

It rained for most of the night and when my alarm went off on Sunday morning, I really wasn’t sure if I was going to ride. I decided to go and at least have a look and make the decision there.

When I arrived they didn’t seem to have had the rain we had at home. I walked the track with the Gordons Racing boys and my thoughts on Saturday were confirmed, the track was very soft under foot and sloppy in places. I wasn’t really looking forward to practice.

Practice: We were fourth practice out and already there were some monster ruts especially over the far side making a few jumps impossible to jump.

I tried to take my time and familiarise myself with the track and which jumps I could jump and which we had to roll.

I had a few get offs and one very silly fall which resulted in me sitting on Rich Tudor’s bike but he got his own back by picking his bike up on my hand whist holding in the clutch.

The track was a mess.

Race 1: I was the third race out of the block. The Burton club had altered the track slightly before the first block. I sat on the gate and thought ‘I need a good start’, the gate dropped and I got a lot of wheelspin I looked across and everyone looked to do the same.

I entered the first corner in about 6th but the rider in front of me washed out and went down and I had nowhere to go but down myself.

I lifted my bike but the fallen rider's Leatt brace strap had hooked around my footpeg the opposite side to him, so with me lifting the bike to help the marshal to unhook the strap, the marshal grabbed a hold of my exhaust header pipe (note to all: the header pipes on the four stroke get a lot hotter than a two stroke) and squealed.

I finally got going and worked my way back up to the back of the pack. The conditions had dried out but the ruts were very hard and deep causing a few problems.  Finished 10th.

Race 2: With another good start I took an outside line in a left hander this was a bad choice so early in the race this opened the door and I got blocked passed and went down.

I managed to keep the bike running and gave chase, I was making mistakes and trying to hard in places and the ruts were starting to get hard and were less forgiving. I had a big moment over the tabletop and landed in a rut which was a scary moment but I managed to stay on the bike but this was enough to stop me jumping the table top on the following laps. Finished 10th.

Race 3: The temperature had dropped for our last race, I knew the track would be at it worst.

I got a really good jump out the gate from the outside and pulled a great holeshot with Andy Marchant and Dale Halls right behind me. I knew if I just concentrated and kept it smooth and didn’t make any mistakes, I could hold them off for a while.

I approached the little tabletop into the right hander and went for the wide line but Andy and Dale nipped up the inside to take the position.

I knew I had to hold onto them for as long as possible as they were the two fastest riders of the day. I made a few mistakes at the wrong times and had a good battle to the end of the race. Finished 9th.

10-10-9 for the day and an improvement in my riding and fitness on a day where I almost didn’t ride was a good result.

I think in drier conditions the track would be good with some really good racing, All credit to the Burton club for running the meeting and making alterations after practice for the better. Well done.

I would like to thank my Girlfriend Shelle, Andy Marchant, Rich Tudor and the Palmer Clan for all their help throughout the day. Next week’s report will be from Walsall’s Hobs Hole track.

Cannock at Abbots Bromley 06.04.08

When walking the track on Saturday, I could see that the Cannock club had put a lot of time and effort into the track over the close season and on first impression they had made the track better and more challenging as result from the feedback from the riders they got at their last meeting last season.

On waking up on Sunday morning I couldn’t believe how much snow had fallen during the night, there was a good 6 inch’s outside my house but I still got in the van and headed to the track. When I arrived the place was white over you couldn’t see the track, ropes or stakes this was a concern.

Practice
The Cannock club were keen to get things underway and started practice a little early, but even with their warnings on the PA I just wasn’t ready as were a few other experts. I went out in the senior practice and felt very comfortable, there was a new section which was still grass and down hill this was a very difficult section and was very slippery at the bottom, there was also a set of woops/rollers which I immediately got sussed. I was looking forward to the racing.

Race 1
The track looked in superb condition, I lined up on the gate and knew a good start was needed I got a good jump but got squeezed in on the first corner and almost hit a fallen rider, I ran in sixth position for most of the first lap but was struggling on some parts of the back section, I tried to ride smoothly but made a few mistakes allowing riders to come past me. Finished 10th

Race 2
The track looked to be holding up really well, got another good jump out the gate and came around the first corner in 5th but made the wrong line choice in the next and lost three or four spaces, I was still having problems over the back of the track losing another position or two. Finished 12th

Race 3
The temperature had dropped quite a bit on the lead up to my final race with a few snow flack’s starting to fall, again I got another good jump out the gate, I lost a few places on the first lap and was making silly mistakes, I got my head in gear and rode my own race. Finished 10th

I’m happy with my starts today but really struggled in the first couple of laps of the races, this is something I have to work on. All in all I rode all three races and felt comfortable on the bike. Cannock wasn’t one of the better tracks in our group last year but with the all work they have put into the track and the way it held up in the conditions is as a result of all the preparation and hard work the Cannock Club have put in. Well Done.

Next weeks it's Burton's track at Stenson. Burton is a new club in our group for this year.

Walsall at Hobs Hole 16.03.08

The Walsall club had made a few alterations to their track for the first meeting of the year there, while walking the track on Saturday I could see there were a few new jump’s and a lot of top soil/hardcore put down this contained a lot of stone and brick, all in all the track looked alright and I was looking forward to riding it.

Practice
The rain that fell constantly from midday Saturday until Sunday morning confirmed what I was thinking, the new section was a quagmire and it was going to be tricky also at the bottom of the final uphill was very, very, sloppy.

The experts were first out so were the guinea pigs to see which sections were going to be tricky. I felt really good in practice and with the track being so sloppy it was hard on the bikes but enjoyable, a few rut’s had started to form on the newer jumps so something to keep an eye on.

Race 1: MX2 Experts were the sixth race out so the track had deteriorated considerably from first practice I knew a good start was imperative.

I got a really good jump out the gate and lead up to the first corner but shut off to early and allowed Jack Cox and Dale Halls to get around me on the first corner which was off camber.

The track had some dry lines but was starting to get rough, I made a few mistakes which pushed me further down inside the top ten.

I followed a rider into a rut at the bottom of the last uphill but he lost his balance and fell this put us both on the deck I managed to pick up the bike but the ground was so sloppy my feet were stuck. Finished 13th

Race 2
I was really focused on this race after the first, I just needed to get a good start and keep it on two wheels. As the gate dropped I got another great start but again got pinched off at the first corner, but on the first lap I stalled the bike and by time I got started I dropped to almost last. I started to push to hard and made more silly mistakes. My front wheel pushed over a very soft berm in the new section and it took all my strength to pick it up. I made one more mistake and vent down and another rider collided with my bike, after we untangled our bikes the race was over. DNF.

Race 3
I was exhausted after the second race and the track was now very rough I decided to sit the last one out.

The Walsall club managed to get the racing finished very early considering the late start to practice, and with no red flags or incidents the club coped with the bad weather very well. I was very happy with my starts today but just need to improve my fitness. I now have a two week rest until Cannock’s meeting at Abbotts Bromley.
