Sad Death of Terry Furlong

From Dale Moreton

It is with great sadness that I report the death Terry Furlong. Terry, or TLF as he was known to many, took a Trials licence with the Barracudas in 1973 and was soon an active Committee member. He held many positions on the committee through the 70’s and 80’s. In the late 70’s he also took on the role of Group Co-ordinator of the then Centre group, sat on the Executive and Motocross committees and when the AMCA became a Ltd company, Terry was one of the original Directors, serving from 1984 until 1993.

Terry’s sons Mark and Sean were both motocross riders with the Barracudas in the 70’s and 80’s, Mark being the youngest rider at the first Branston meeting, Sean moved on to Enduros which was another of Terry’s passions.

Terry was a face well known at British Championships looking after Sean and later Paul Edmondson whom he continued to help for many years. Our thoughts are with Olive, Mark, Sean and families.

MX1 IMBA & MX2 Champs
at Branston
Sunday 3rd August 2008
The Barracudas would like to thank our partners for the IMBA and AMCA Championship meeting held at Branston on the 3rd of August 2008 and perhaps fill you in on a few details that you didn’t know.

Pidcock Honda,  if you visited them you would have met Chris, Steve, and Mick. A Grass track champion, a Motocross champion and an Enduro champion, what a wealth of off road experience. Now based at Long Eaton they are our local Honda Off Road dealer.

KBC Helmets, thanks to Loz and Connie. KBC who sponsor the Lane bros also sponsored Pete Weaver with helmet and goggles at the weekend. Pete had a superb 10th in the first MX2 race but crashed in second and was glad of the protection offered by his new lid.

CGH Imports, what a day for their man Clinton Barrs on his Pro Circuit equipped KTM. The truck looks the part in any paddock thanks Colin Dave and Nick.

MX Cutz, Burton-on-Trent’s newest off road dealer, thanks for your support Ollie it’s much appreciated.

Mallory Park Off Road Centre, home of the British GP, supplied us with the hospitality unit for the weekend. Thanks Rob, I’m sure we’ll be working together again next year.

Premier Scaffolding, it’s the third year in a row that Pete has erected the tower for us ( does that mean we get to keep it ). Nothing is ever too much trouble and always with a smile thanks Pete.

Edmondson Racing, another superb display, it was great to see the 2009 KTM’s ( the 250 is mine as soon as I get my hands on the gate money ). Thanks Dek.

Golden Tyres had their impressive range of rubber on display.

Service Hondas of Clive Thorseby. It was great to see Matt Lee trying to tame the beast.

Pete Edmondson, you always know there’s a bargain when Pete’s around, thank you for your contribution Pete.

JW Racing, it’s very rare for Jason not to have what the racers need on his truck and he never lets us down, thanks J Dub.

Once again thank you to you all without your support the weekend would not have been possible, The Barracudas see the Trade area and advertising as an integral part of the event which adds to the spectacle and atmosphere of the whole weekend, we sincerely hope that it has supported and promoted your brands as you would wish.

Our media partners were superb, Off Road Rider gave us the great preview and I’m sure the report will make great reading, cheers Stu. I’m itching to see Mike Woods report in T@MX. Virtual Star put together the programme thanks Matt. Touch Radio gave us loads of plugs and the Nev Ingley interview prior to the event and four live spots during the day (we won’t say who called the track’s new feature The Bum Hole on live radio ), thanks Mark O’Sullivan. Foto-X what can I say, again the exposure they have given us has been first class, thanks Vanessa, Mel and Tim.

The AMCA office pulled out the stops to get everything in place for us Suzanne, Steve, Amanda, Pete and the rest of the team thanks.

The Branston track is difficult to run at the best of times but with the extensions even more so, 27 marshal points required, thank you to you all and a special thanks to those from other clubs, you all did a great job. Dunc and Russ gave up their ride to look after the start along with Stuart Sims, thanks lads.

The track was in great shape, Paul put many hours in on the machines, the Bomb Hole Boys got stung to death clearing the nettles and brambles, watering on Saturday was spot on (Donington want you now). If you bumped a stake, pulled a rope or picked up a strimmer thanks.

Travelling marshal, Blue flags, Finisher, Swift lap scorers, Commentators, Track maintenance, First Aid, Entrance gate it ran like clockwork.

It was great to get such good feedback form our foreign friends and to hear the reports that they had been given by riders that had been before. Some arrived Wednesday and left Monday, Branston seems to becoming a holiday destination.

To say that I am proud to be a Barracuda this week would be an understatement. What was acheived by a group of friends on the 3rd of August was awesome. Pure teamwork.

Burntwood Barracudas at the British GP

Twenty Barracudas made the trip to Mallory Park to assist with the watering  for the British G.P. The weekend gave the club the ideal opportunity to test the new BV and gain some valuable publicity for their forthcoming IMBA MX1 round.

It is a compliment that the organisers of the British G.P. contacted the club,  to use their experience of  watering where a tractor and bowser can’t go. The brief was to water the valley section of the track, but on seeing that the low ground pressure of the BV had no effect on the freshly prepared track surface, the start straight became part of the job too.

Dale Moreton: 'Working with the professionals was great experience for us and we hope to incorporate some of the things we learnt into our events, and again push the standard up. The club was also represented on the track, as our own IMBA champion, Bernie Andrews got a ride in the Parade of Legends. Simo thought he should have had a ride but apparently he was never fast enough, perhaps we can get you a job on the start next year Stu. Thanks go out to Leavesley International for a second BV and Transport, thanks James and Steve. RHL and ARW treated us really well, thanks Gareth and Rob. Our next outing at Mallory will be for a training day.'
