Bradford and James take maximum Championship points at their Home track

Simon Bradford and Neil James, aboard their KTM VMC 580, powered to a treble race victory at their home track at Downwood Farm, Shobdon on Sunday.

This was the penultimate round of the 2008 AMCA Sidecarcross Championship, and Bradford and James were looking for another good haul of points for their championship campaign.

The track at Shobdon was well prepared before the start of racing, but after practice it was clear that the track was going to rut up due to the wet weather we have suffered from in recent weeks and the fact that there were 7 blocks of racing to be done.

The first race was pretty uneventful for Simon and Neil, taking the lead early on and taking full control. The boys put some strong laps in mid race to give them some breathing space between them and the hard charging Steve France and Lee Machin, who as always, were really flying as well. Simon and Neil held the lead to the chequered flag with France and Machin finishing in second.

Before the start of the second race Simon and Neil decided to go for a wander around the track to study some lines, as by now the track was changing from race to race. There were some really deep holes forming in places and some of the ruts were getting very deep, even to the point where the outfit could ground out in them!

The Sidecars went to the line for the start of race 2, with Simon and Neil having first pick of the gate. The gate dropped and it was Bradford and James who came out of the first corner in the lead with the others in tow.

They hit the uphill double jump on full throttle but they clipped the top of the hill on the way over, and Neil decided to do a superman impression and had full marks for style!

Simon momentarily shut off for Neil to regroup and it was back on to full gas for the boys, as that hiccup had cost them a place or two. It was only a few corners later and the boys forced their way back into the lead, the sheer pace they were setting was too much for the few in front of them to handle and they soon pulled away.

The Bradford Racing duo were putting their heads down and led all the way to the chequered flag. France and Machin had not had the best start in the race but pushed all the way to come over the line in second place.

The third Moto of the day was more of a race than the previous two.

The Bradford Racing duo surged into the lead but this time France and Machin were right up there and were not going to make life easy for Simon and Neil.

The gap between the two teams seemed to stay around 2 or 3 seconds and then France/ Machin would close it, only for Bradford and James to pull away again.

It was a good race to watch, Bradford and James looking fast and smooth, with France and Machin looking fast and menacing!

As the race wore on you could see it was really hard work on the crews and must have been tiring. Nevertheless, No 1- Bradford and James and No2- France and Machin were still battling for the win, and it was Simon and Neil who were to take their third victory of the day and take yet another maximum haul of points.

By obtaining a maximum score of 75 points, the boys had increased their championship lead to 67 points over second placed Steve France and Lee Machin with one round to go at Bromsberrow on November 2nd. The boys know that they can clinch the championship in the first race next Sunday and only have to play it safe, with France and Machin having to win. Simon Bradford has been in this position many times and with his experience he knows what it takes to win championships. But can you see him and Neil settling for second place in a race with the form they are on now?

Weston Beach Race 2008
First bad luck of the season hits Bradford Racing duo
Report by Wayne James, Pics by Kelly Bradford
The 2008 annual Weston Beach race was held on the weekend of the 11th and 12th of October 2008. The Saturday was the quad and sidecar race with Sunday being the day of the huge solo race. Simon Bradford and Neil James of Bradford Racing were entered in the sidecar race with sponsorship from Stewart Lines of Maximum Solutions, and Stewart himself was riding along with new passenger Geoff Wigglesworth.

Weston is always a lottery and everyone knows there is always an element of luck involved in this type of race.  So much can go wrong, a breakdown, get taken out, physical exhaustion, the list goes on. The Bradford Racing duo were pretty confident with their preparation. They had won the tough “Welsh 2 Day Enduro” back in June and more recently they had won “The Simon Rees Memorial Hare and Hounds” in August, which was a 3 hour hare and Hounds at Cwmythig Hill motocross track.
The bike they were riding at Weston was one of their spare KTM VMC 540’s which had been meticulously prepared by Bill Bradford. New guards were fitted around the bike to try to reduce the amount of sand flying up, a large enduro tank was fitted and also a six speed gearbox. Simon and Neil’s bike was also sporting a new livery, the same as Stewart Lines and Geoff Wigglesworth’s Yamaha VMC 480. They were all white with new “Maximum Solutions” graphics, this was due to Stewart’s sponsorship and the fact they will be riding for him next year.
As Saturday morning dawned, the skies were blue and the weather was really nice with glorious sunshine.  There were some good sidecars entered, including GP crews, British Championship MX crews and also British Championship Enduro crews.

Just before 11 am Neil and Simon ran to get their bike out of park ferme and were in the top thirty or so as the sidecars and quads headed down to the beach. As the clock turned to 11am they released the gates and a mixture of 500 Sidecars and quads roared down the beach. Weston start straight is always a spectacle and this was no different to any other year! As the first bikes appeared around the first turn, Simon and Neil were clearly well up and were the first sidecar. The boys seemed to clear the first dune with relative ease, but then found that the next few weren’t  so easy! They were off pushing and by this time there were others getting stuck around them making it much harder to try to find good lines.

Disaster then struck. While still leading the sidecars, the boys hit about the tenth dune so hard it smashed a “T” off on the radiator and left them go up in a cloud of steam! That was the end of their challenge. Simon killed the engine and the boys pushed their bike back to the pits which was an extremely long way!
The pit crew of Bill Bradford, Emrys James and Paul Morris were ready and waiting for the boys. Simon and Neil entered the pit area and Bill and Emrys got to work on the bike.

At first it wasn’t sure if there has been other damage done to the bike but Bill had a quick look and gave the thumbs up for the boys to carry on.

By this time nearly 45 minutes had gone by so any chance of the boys going for the victory had gone. Nevertheless, the boys charged on and put in some seriously fast laps to gain a place or two. In doing that they set the fastest lap of the race which was something the boys were to be later, really pleased about.

The rest of the race seemed to go well for them, but they did have one bit of a moment when Simon decided to go over the bars and looked like a pro as he graciously went face first into a deep puddle!

Obviously pleased with his efforts Si then got up and bowed to crowd, who were in hysterics and cheering!

After 3 hours of racing the race came to a close, with Simon and Neil pulling their way back up to 13th place, which was a good effort with the troubles they had encountered. They both found it pretty hard but had enjoyed it all the same. The big news was that Stewart Lines and Geoff Wigglesworth had gone on to take a well deserved victory in the sidecar class! Congratulations must go to them!

So there we have it, Weston Beach Race was over for another year. Simon and Neil had not got the result they were looking for but like Neil said: “If this is the only bad luck we suffer from this year, we can live with that!” It goes to prove, Weston still relies on a lot of luck, but full praise to Stewart and Geoff for their hard earned victory.  The boys main focus now will be the final 2 Rounds of the 2008 AMCA Championship and they will be looking for good points at both meetings to try to clinch the title that Simon Bradford has made his own the last few years!

Druids at Anchor Hill, Kerry
Rd 6 AMCA Sidecar Championships

Report by Wayne James, Pics by Emma Bradford

Bradford and James fly to yet another stunning victory!

Bradford Racing duo Simon Bradford and Neil James flew to yet another treble race victory at Round 6 of the AMCA Sidecarcross Championship, held at the superb Druids track near Newtown in Mid Wales last Sunday.

This was a change of venue for the series as is was planned for Shobdon, but the Druids track turned out to be a very good replacement. The track was set in a valley and using the natural terrain the course descended up and down the hills and around the bottom of the valley. After practice Simon Bradford described the track as “very technical” and was to his and Neil’s liking.

As the gate dropped for race one No 15 Alan Peever and Tony Phillips surged into the lead followed by Bradford and James. Simon and Neil soon found a way past and set about putting their heads down to open up a gap between them and the rest of the field. The race was pretty uneventful for Bradford and James who, once got in front never looked back and went on to take the win. Steve France and Lee Machin finished second, proving they are always there to pressure Bradford/ James if they make the slightest slip up, with Jamie Stevens and Scott Graham finishing in third.

The second race of the day was very similar to the first. Bradford/ James again taking an early lead and looking to pull from the rest of the field. France and Machin were moving through the field fast and were up to second and trying to close the gap on Bradford and James. The pit board was given from Linda Bradford indicating the gap had closed slightly, so Simon and Neil really pushed hard, opening the gap up in the closing laps to ensure they crossed the line first to take another well-deserved victory. France/ Machin finished second with Stephens/ Graham third.

For the third race the track was looking a lot more torn up and had got considerably rougher from the second race. As the race got underway Simon and Neil holeshot the first corner from Stevens and Graham, with the rest of the field in tow. It looked to be another carbon copy of races one and two with Bradford/ James again pulling away within the first lap and were getting quicker. Disaster then struck. An accident involving Marc Cooper and his son Nathan causing the race to be red flagged. Unfortunately Nathan was hurt badly with a suspected broken leg. I’m sure everyone wishes him all the best and hopes he makes a speedy recovery. A slight delay in proceedings as they awaited the air ambulance and then the riders went back to the line for the restart.

The sidecars then roared from the line for the restart of race 3, with Alan Peever and Tony Phillips taking another holeshot with Bradford and James in second. On the third corner, the Bradford Racing duo cut inside Peever and Phillips and drag raced them to the next corner, taking the lead in the process. Simon and Neil were again opening up a very sizable gap on the now very challenging track. France and Machin had again moved through to second and were by far the next fastest outfit to Bradford and James. The race was again uneventful for Simon and Neil taking the chequered flag for their third win of the day, doing their Championship chances the world of good. France and Machin were again second, completing a trio of second places for them for the day, with Stevens and Graham again taking third, giving them a trio of third places for the day.

Simon and Neil had really enjoyed the event and were full of praise for the track. By claiming maximum points again they had opened up their championship lead to 58 points, which is a nice cushion to have with just two rounds to go!

The next Round of the Championship is at Bradford and James’ home track at Shobdon at the end of October. I’m sure that Simon and Neil will be looking for another good ride there and to rack in a haul of points for their Championship campaign.

There is also talk in the camp of doing the Weston Beach Race on October 11th and having a sponsored ride from Stewart Lines of Maximum Solutions. Keep an eye out for that one! The boys’ undoubted speed in motocross, along with their victories in the tough Welsh Two day Enduro in June and more recently their other win in the Simon Rees Memorial Hare and Hounds in August would surely have to make them contenders for the podium?

Simon Rees Memorial Hare & Hounds
Report by Wayne James, Pics by Emma Bradford

On Sunday 17th August 2008, Rhayader and District Motorcycle Club held the annual “Simon Rees Memorial Hare & Hounds” at Cwmythig Hill Motocross track in Mid Wales. The event was a three hour Hare and Hounds, with a track length of approximately 4 miles using their motocross track and surrounding fields. The event catered for both Solos and sidecars with a combined entry totalling around 150 bikes and although they had suffered from constant rain leading up to the event, the weather was just right and riding conditions were superb.

Local crew Simon Bradford and Neil James from Llandrindod Wells were entered aboard their KTM VMC 525 along with ten or so other sidecars. Stuart Lines and Tony Phillips were entered on Stuart’s Yamaha VMC 480, as well as fellow AMCA competitors Colin Griffiths and James Morrell. Some good Enduro outfits were riding including Aled Evans with Darren Bishop in the chair, David Williams and Graham Mcphee and Steve Price and Aled Jones to name a few.

As the clock turned 11am the flag dropped and the Experts solos took off, followed by the Clubman, Veteran and Novice riders and last of all the Sidecars. Bradford Racing duo Simon Bradford and Neil James had to start from the second row, but as the flagged dropped Bradford and James’ outfit roared into life and headed for the first corner, overtaking several outfits in the process! As the sidecars came around the first turn Bradford/ James were in third, by the second corner they were second and the third corner into the lead, barging Williams and Mcphee aside in the process!

Bradford/ James then put their heads down to open up a very sizable lead by the end of the first lap from Williams/ Mcphee in second, Griffiths/ Morrell in third and Aled Evans and Darren Bishop in fourth. Bradford and James seemed to be really flying and were passing a lot of the solo riders in the process, the slightly damp conditions favouring the sidecars for grip.

At around an hour and a half into the event, Bradford and James came in for fuel and fresh goggles, still well in the lead by over 5 minutes from second placed Williams and Mcphee. Bradford and James senior (Bill Bradford and Emrys James) had things well under control in the pits and the bike was refuelled in record time! A quick drink for the lads as well as clean gloves and fresh goggles and they were on their way.

As the race wore on, Bradford/ James extended their gap over second place and they were still really flying at even the two hour mark, proving their fitness was impressive this year. Towards the end with just over half an hour to go, it was decided to pull Simon and Neil in for one last fuel stop and just to check all was ok before the final stint of the race. A quick splash of fuel and quick drink and they were on their way again. The boys decided to back their pace off slightly for the last half an hour as their lead was so big and had been unchallenged all day.

As the clock hit 14:00hrs the chequered flag went out signalling the end of the 3 hour race. Bradford and James brought their outfit across the line to take a very comfortable victory and 15 laps to their credit nearly a lap up on second placed crew Williams and Mcphee, with fellow motocross riders Colin Griffiths and James Morrell in a well deserved third with 13 laps to their credit.

In doing 15 laps, Bradford and James had beaten three quarters of the solo entry and finished just 2 and a half laps down on the overall solo winner, Jon Hinam (who is due to represent Wales in the International Six Days Enduro in Greece in two weeks). Not a bad effort from Bradford and James, backing up their Welsh 2 Day Enduro win in June and proving that they can ride and win not only motocross but Enduro as well!

For Simon, this was the third time he had ridden this event and his third victory in the sidecar class (he won it with Simon Morgan in 2005 and Jeff James in 2006)! Neil had been very successful at the event in previous years but on a solo, winning the Clubman Solo class in 2003 and finishing top 5 in the Expert solo in 2005.

Many thanks to Rhayader and District Motorcycle Club, for putting on a superbly run event, with an excellent course that catered for Sidecars as well as Solos.

Wolverhampton at Hungry Hill
Rd 5 AMCA Sidecar Championships

Things really hotted-up, in more ways than one, at the weekend as the fifth round of the AMCA Sidecar Championship got underway at Wolves Hungry Hill track.

Never a club to do things by halves, Wolves third meeting of the season was a real scorcher. Their first meeting, the Sidecar IMBA, was a complete washout, the second meeting had strong winds bordering on hurricane force and the third was incredibly hot. With another meeting due in two weeks time, heavy snow seems to be the bookies favourite!

The serious business of the Sidecar Championship began in earnest on Sunday morning as Simon Bradford and Neil James, cousin of Jeff James, posted the fastest lap time in their first lap of qualifying, a second ahead of closest rivals Jamie Stevens and Scott Grahame. Championship contenders Steve France and Lee Machin were just fractions behind in third.

Bradford and James didn’t have things all their own way as in each race they had to battle to the front as a few very quick outfits beat them to the hole-shot, but battle they did and took all three wins to strengthen their grip on the 2008 Championship. When Simon Morgan retired last season as Bradford’s passenger many people thought they would have a chance at the title this year, but Neil James’ first season as a passenger has seen him to be every bit as consistent as Morgie.

Jamie Stevens and Scott Grahame took second in each race as Steve France and Lee Machin took third in the first and second races and were in contention to take a second place in the final race when their engine gave out. Alan Peever and Tony Phillips had three consistent finishes and it was heartening to see a couple of new faces on the podium at the end of the day as they took third place overall.

Stewart Lines and Marc Cooper were out on their new Maximum Solutions Husaberg 630, and it was a handful. The outfit had power aplenty but there are still a few handling problems to be sorted. They improved throughout the day and consolidated an initial fourth spot with a third in the final race to take fourth overall.

Mark Banks and Mike Geraghty were within inches of Peever and Phillips throughout every race and complete the line-up for the overall top five.

With just a few round left in the Championship, competition is increasing but the Bradford Racing team knows what it takes to win titles, and how to keep them. Although the points gap is growing, Bradford Racing will be going full throttle right to the end.

Bradford Racing duo Matt Taylor and Nick Morgan (left) had a good outing at Round 5 of the AMCA Sidecar Championship.

Scoring points in all races, the pair finished the day in 14th overall and now lie in 16th place in the Championship standings.
Bradford Racing Sidecarcross Team
Welsh 2 Day Enduro 2008
The “Welsh 2 Day Enduro” was held recently on the 26th and 27th of June 2008, starting from Llandrindod Wells in Mid Wales. Two days of riding with each day consisting of 160 miles of off road going faced the riders. Being by far the biggest Enduro on the off road calendar, entries for this years “Welsh” totalled over 600 riders, with nearly as many being turned way.

The event catered for Solo’s and Sidecar’s and was one of the rounds of the 2008 British ACU Sidecar Enduro Championship. Over 30 outfits were entered, including two from the “Bradford Racing” Sidecar Motocross team.

Llandrindod duo Simon Bradford and Neil James were in the Sidecar Championship class on their KTM VMC 540 and team mates Matt Taylor (from Llandrindod) and Nick Morgan (from nearby Builth Wells) were also riding on their KTM VMC 525.

Both crews are used to fighting it out on motocross tracks throughout the UK, so this was a little different for them, although Bradford had won the sidecar class at the 2 Day last year with Simon Morgan in the chair.

At dawn break on the first morning of the event the weather was very wet and was set to make conditions very tough for all riders. The sidecar crews started first, with the first ones leaving the lakeside in Llandrindod at 08:01 am. The riders did some loops around Llanwrthwl, Beulah, Irfon forest and then to the famous “Water splashes” at Strata Florida, which was set to catch a few riders out for the sheer depth of the water. By mid afternoon, the first of the sidecar crews headed back into Llangurig, then into Rhayader, and then to the first of four special tests held at Cwmythig Hill motocross circuit. Neil and Mark Rowland’s of nearby Llanidloes set the fastest time on their Husaberg powered outfit beating Bradford/James by 14 seconds, with Graham Jones and Simon Brown in third, a further 7 seconds down on Bradford /James.

The sidecars headed through some very tough going in forestry’s around Abbey-Cwm-Hir, which lead them to the second special test of the day at Home farm. Bradford /James set the fastest time around there in the championship sidecar class beating Jones/Brown by 7 seconds and the Rowland’s Brothers by 8 seconds, thus cutting their lead to 6 seconds. All three of these sidecar crews stayed clean on time and the Rowland’s Brothers were to lead over night from Bradford/James and Jones/Brown. In the sidecar Clubman class Bradford Racing duo Taylor/Morgan were setting good test times but had lost time on the going, therefore dropping them down the field.

The weather for day 2 was a similar story, being very windy with heavy showers. The course was also going to be very tricky in places due to the 600 plus bikes that had ridden it on day 1 - however the course was to be ridden in reverse for the second day making it very interesting indeed! On the first test of the morning Bradford/James set the fastest time some 8 seconds faster than the Rowland’s Brothers and 7 seconds faster than Jones/Brown, therefore taking the overall lead in the sidecar class.

On the final test of the event at the motocross track at Cwmythig Hill, Bradford/James again set the fastest time giving them a comfortable cushion at the top of the sidecar class. Taylor/Morgan were again setting fast test times in the Sidecar Clubman class and were looking good for a top finish. As the day wore on the riders headed up to Llangurig, Strata Florida and into the Irfon Forest which was a very “tight” check for everyone. Bradford/James were the only sidecar outfit to go clean in this check, all they had to do now was get back to Llandrindod via some road sections and Bwlchciliau Forest.

Bradford/James went on to take the win, over 2 minutes and 32 seconds ahead of second place crew Jones/Brown, with David Williams and Graham Mcphee in third place. Bradford Racing’s other crew Taylor/Morgan went on to take a well-deserved runner up position in the Clubman Class, an excellent result as this was their first “Welsh 2 Day”.

On behalf of Bradford racing and I am sure all of the riders, many thanks to the organisers for an excellent run and challenging event. Thank you also to Bradford Racing sponsors: P J Martin Ground works, Off Road Only, Ian Jones Tyres, Arrow Plant and Tool Hire, Foto-x, Lazer Helmets, Michelin and Moterex Oils. Finally, congratulations to Tom Sagar for winning the huge Solo class.

Upton at Longdon
Rd 4 AMCA Sidecar Championships

The fourth round of the AMCA Sidecar Championships took place on Sunday 13th July at Upton's Longdon track, nr Upton on Severn.

Still leading after three rounds of the Championship, Bradford and James were being hunted down by Steve France and Lee Machin who in turn had Jamie Stevens and Scott Grahame hot on their heels.

Upon initial inspection the Longdon track met with approval from the sidecars. The start straight looked like a quarter-mile drag strip, looping left at the end and leading to a series of turns which headed for a fast, natural rhythm section, followed by an uphill jump into a tight left hander.

The natural features of the track really lend themselves to spectacular motocross racing. A big drop-off followed by an equally large uphill, with optional ski jump, proved to be the downfall of many riders in the first few laps of each race but eventually most had conquered it.

The sidecar opener was entertaining. Bradford and James had to work hard for their victory as France and Machin bore down on them, and set the fastest lap. Jamie Stevens and Scott Grahame made it a three horse race while Andy Grahame and Neill Friary were just off the pace in fourth. An under-powered Stewart Lines and Marc Cooper took fifth but their claim to fame was that theirs was the only outfit to attempt and complete the tough uphill ski jump, every lap!

Race two really upset the applecart as France and Machin battled hard and took Bradford and James for the win.

Once again Stevens and Grahame took third with Alan Peever and Tony Phillips making up a few places to take fourth, just ahead of Lines and Cooper in fifth once again.

Everything rested on the third and final race. The top two outfits were level on points as the gate dropped and the Bradford/James outfit were out in front by the end of the first lap.

France and Machin were gaining fast and pressurising the leaders but disaster struck when their cut-off switch was dislodged.

Some quick thinking and furious work getting it back in place meant they lost a lot of ground but somehow managed to keep the motor running. They surged onward to try and catch the leaders but simply ran out of time.

Bradford and James maintained their position atop the Championship table as a wave of others seem to be charging hard this season, but Si Bradford is a wily campaigner and knows what it takes to win.

Acorns at Peacocks Hey
Rd 1 AMCA Sidecar Championships

As if by fate the opening round of the AMCA 2008 Sidecar Championship kicked off on 1st June, just one week after a very muddy Sidecar IMBA, which was abandoned after one race at Cleobury Mortimer.

No mud this week, the revamped track at Peacocks Hey was watered before racing began and that was all that was necessary. Major improvements to the drainage system in addition to the relocated start straight really improved the track overall, although many people would say this was long overdue.

The high mound in the centre of the location served as the only spectator point for much of the track, consequently, because there was no spectator access to the track, there were no ropes and posts lining the track itself, just earth berms about 450mm high. Most riders preferred this.

A flurry of red flags soon evaporated shortly after racing began. Riders gradually became accustomed to riding in dry conditions, following months of mud. The sidecars were loving it, much of the track had been widened during the improvements and there was some great racing from the outfits, with room to pass, a critical factor at most tracks.

The problem of sorting out two outfits both piloted and passengered by a Bradford and a James has been resolved. Bill Bradford has finally hung up his boots, content to watch Simon with new passenger Neil James, Jeff James’ grandson, challenge for yet another Championship title.

Reigning Champ, Si Bradford certainly didn’t have things all his own way and although he eventually won all three races he and his passenger really had to work hard for once.

The opening race was cut short when there was a big pile-up in front of race-control as the frontrunners overtook backmarkers. The result stood and Bradford/James took the win with Steve France and Lee Machin a very close second and Alan Peever/Tony Phillips third.

Race Two saw France and Machin take the lead as Bradford and James were jammed mid-pack off the start and the leaders hung on until the final lap when the reigning champ just squeezed past for the win with Peever and Phillips third once again.

Tony Grahame and Melissa Griffin stunned the field with the hole-shot in the third and final race, they hung on for three laps before Bradford and James stormed through with Stevens and Grahame in hot pursuit. France and Machin pulled to third by the flag.

Si Bradford and Neil James are underway with a hat-trick of wins followed by France and Machin but the surprise of the day was overall third place by Tony Grahame and Melissa Griffin.

Wolverhampton at Hungry Hill, Cleobury
Sidecar IMBA GB Round

Sunday dawned and the clubs worst fears were realised. It was pouring down and continued to do so, non-stop, for the whole day. The track wasn’t in too bad a shape for the start of practice, dust was still kicking up in many places, but gradually the rain took hold and the track was unrecognisable as racing started.

The IMBA Sidecar riders got their first, and what was to prove to be their only race, at the Sidecar IMBA on Sunday 25th May. The two Russian stars, Scherbinin and Sosnovskikh, ran away with the race and showed why they are in the top three worldwide. Van Keulen / Van Wanrooij followed the pair for most of the race but Si Bradford and Neil James charged past to take second place at the flag, pushing last years IMBA Champions to third.
